This half term at Hookstone Chase Primary School, Mr Crooks has been working with the Year 5 and 6 Maple class exploring what a well rounded PE student looks like. The focus of the theory lessons have explored the importance of our core social skills and other core skills such as leadership, resilience, teamwork and organisation. The practical lessons then focused on how these skills are applied, in a competitive, fun and active setting. Some of the sports we have played include tchoukball, handball, bench ball, crossover and dodgeball. Ultimately, this unit of work was aimed to successfully equip the students with the tools necessary for secondary PE, how to become young leaders and role models for the younger generation.

On Monday we hosted an orienteering and team building festival at Kirkhammerton Primary School. Year 5 & 6 children from Kirkhammerton, Staveley and Boroughbridge Primary Schools took part in a carousel of activities. Two activities were based on problem-solving where children had to break codes and transport objects in different ways. The final activity was orienteering where children used a map to locate different points around the school site. It was great to see so many children working so effectively as a team and a range of social skills used. At the end of the festival two children from each school who were identified by the teachers for using the social skills were rewarded with a certificate.

A late entry from Sporting Influence's very own Louise (Finance Admin), saved Sporting Influence's blushes after Mr McTernan "forgot" he had to do the dance! With minutes left of the Sporting Influence day, heroic Louise stepped in to make dreams come true! Take a look below at our attempt. It is important to say, this attempt is by no means perfect and is certainly not our first attempt! If at first you don't succeed, try, try and try again!

Temple Newsam, Sunday 24th March, 11:00am. The hooter goes and around 700 people set off on their journey of 5k/10k/15k all in support of Stroke Awareness. The 15 strong Sporting Influence team, including full-time and part-time staff, parents, children and siblings, began their run in fine spirits with a mixture of the distances being covered. As the morning went on the runs began to finish and those left out on the course found the hills got steeper and the wind got stronger! By the end of the morning, all of the Sporting Influence team had crossed the line and completed their challenge. A big thanks goes to every one who took part, supported &. cheered. How much did we raise for Stroke Awareness? £1,125 With more donations pledged and awaiting collection! Everyone, how ever little donated, how ever much you helped. From everyone at Sporting Influence THANK YOU!

With less than two days to go until the run we are thrilled with the amount of money raised from the amazing people around us. When we set out our plans for this event, our aim was to bring together a small community to run with us, fundraise along the way and by the end of it all have helped a good cause whilst being active and setting a president within the community. We can proudly tell you that we have reached a whopping £765 in sponsorship with more pledged. Can we reach the magical £1000? We cannot wait for Sunday. Hopefully, we will be creating a small video for you all after the event, so you can see just how much fun we had and how we worked hard for the money sponsored! Thank you to everyone who has donated, taken part or supported us a long the way! If you would like to leave a late sponsorship please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/sporting-influence

This week brought up the final active learning week of Mr McTernan's Sports Numeracy at Kildwick School. Mr McTernan has been working for the last 9 weeks on developing maths confidence and incorporating physical activity into the maths lessons to help the children grow. Working with a Year 2 and Year 4/5 class, this week the children worked on mental subtraction and bus stop division respectively. The lesson is designed on two prongs: The first being the physical challenge, how are we going to challenge the children physically and hopefully in a way which those kinaesthetic learners will develop? The second prong of the lesson, the mental challenge, the maths that they are learning and inevitably the results on the post test paper. Mr McTernan has been extremely impressed with the attitude to learning from the children and has noted the vast difference in confidence from week 1 - week 9. Next week is the final week is the final week - Post Test Paper. We know they have got it in the bag! Good luck to everyone at Kildwick who is part of the Sports Numeracy groups and well done for all your hard work over the last 10 weeks!

We recently attended Western Primary Schools Science Day to help the children understand more about the body and exercise. As part of the fun filled day, where the children made their own hair gel and performed other crazy experiments amongst other science related topics, Mr Crooks delivered a session on exercise and the body. Some of the questions that the children asked and the information delivered more commonly found in a GCSE PE classroom!!! How does your body change after exercise? Why do we go red?Why do we sweat? What does oxygen do in our bodies? Why does it hurt when we exercise? An all round amazing experience for the children and a fantastic day to be a part of! Thank you to all at Western who made the day happen and we look forward to your next topical day! Take a look below at what Year 6 student Sebastian Gaminde thought of the day. "On Wednesday, Mr Crooks from Sporting Influence, came into our school to help us to understand the affect of exercise on our body. During this experiment, he asked us to check our heartbeat before and after a series of exercises including: Running Lunges Burpees Relays Many more exercises. These exercises created our hearts to pump the blood faster around our body and therefore exercising our body. We felt breathless, red faced, sweaty and tired!Thank you to Sporting Influence for taking part in our science day!"
